Where to find Michelangelo in Florence?

Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) was born into an historical Florentine family, and lived for some years near Piazza Santa Croce. Some of his greatest works were made here in this city of art. The great result is that the city is still peppered with magnificent artworks. Here are some places where you can find Michelangelo’s home town.

Chiesa di Santa Spirito: Michelangelo’s famous crucifix, strangely given to the church as a thanks for allowing the young artist to carry out anatomical studies on its dead.
Bargello Museum: Housing the Bacco, this is a piece carved in 1496 and the first piece made by Michelangelo in Rome. It sees the artist turning to another religion, as he carved the God of Wine. The Tondo Pitti is also there, dating back to 1505 and made for one of the Pitti family of the Pitti palace fame. The Virgin Mary is the feature of this piece.

Casa Buonarroti: see the Battaglia dei Centauri and the Madonna della scala at the ‘Buonarotti house’ ? the latter carved when Michelangelo was just 15 years of age!
Santa Maria del Fiore: the breath-taking Pietà is there to see. A statue of Nicodemo hovering over the limp body of Christ, which was made in 1550.

Palazzo Vecchio: Il Genio della Vittoria is housed here, created as part of many pieces of the tomb of the pope, Papa Giulio II in Rome.

The Uffizi: Il Tondo Doni can be found in the Uffizi, one of the world’s greatest museums, the piece being well at home amongst some of the world’s greatest artworks.

The Academia museum: Of course, think of Michelangelo and you think of David. Housed in the Academia, it is kept company by the San Matteo of the same artist. Find a copy of this statue in the place where it was original positioned outside of the Palazzo Vecchio in the Piazza della Signoria, and a bronze version standing pride of place in the must-visit Piazzale Michelangelo overlooking the city.
