The history of Riomaggiore dates back to the beginning of the 1200s.

When heading north from La Spezia, Riomaggiore, is the first village of the Cinque Terre village towns along the stunning coast of Ligura.

Together with the other village towns, the Riomaggiore coast is an offical national park.

The coast of Riomaggiore runs along the Mediterranean, in the Gulf of Genoa. Surrounding the shoreline is an array of tower houses so candy-colourful they look almost edible. There is also a little beach and a wharf in Riomaggiore from where boats depart to the next towns along the Cinque Terre.

Connecting Riamaggiore to the next of the Cinque Terre villages, Manarola, is the famous Via dell’Amore hiking trail. It is also possible to travel between towns via the local train or, when the weather permits, in the local boats.

Riomaggiore is home to several vineyards where a traditional wine is produced and much enjoyed by the locals and visitors alike, particularly in the local restaurants and bars, many of which are located along the centre street of the town, Via Colombo.
