Saints, sinners and dowries

Having girls as children was expensive. You had to be able to afford to give them a dowry. And if you couldn’t, things were bleak and there weren’t many choices.
Fashion, sumptuary laws and frivalry
From the weird to the sublime, fashion was big business and spawned dynasties. Women appearing at court had to be well dressed, especially if you wanted to do business.
