Best of the Bargello Experience – Florence Private Tour
Explore Florence’s most ancient public building now the Bargello National Museum and admire beautiful works by some of the most famous Renaissance sculptors of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
Including Donatello, Verrocchio, and Michelangelo, the Bargello museum is an often overlooked but must see museum experience in Florence.
This tour will give you a better understanding of this city’s fascinating history and how its artists revolutionized art in the Renaissance.
Once a jail
The museum itself also has a mesmerising history, since it served as the home of a high ranking official in the Florentine government and doubled as a jail before being transformed to the museum it is today in the late 19th century.
The museum also houses an incredible collection of weapons, coinage, tapestries and other arts.
You will also see fabulous artworks by Brunelleschi and Ghiberti showcasing the competition for the commission of the baptistery doors in Florence duomo (cathedral) in 1401.
Alongside sculptures from Cellini, Andrea della Robbia and Pisano, there are entire rooms dedicated to Michelangelo’s astounding and often unseen sculptures – including the exquisite ‘Pitti Tondi’ – and the renaissance artist Donatello, whose works includes the fabulously effeminate sculpture of David wearing a whimsical floral hat.
