Journey into Italy’s Heartbeat: The Unforgettable Calcio Storico

The thrill of Italy lies in its tapestry of history and culture, beautifully personified in the legendary Calcio Storico. Nestled in the stunning cityscape of Florence, this medieval sport unites passion, tradition, and athletic prowess. Artviva Luxury Travel, your bespoke guide to unforgettable Italian experiences, invites you to witness this spectacle, wrapped in a cocoon of opulence and luxury.

Delving into Calcio Storico: A Time-Honored Italian Tradition

Born in the Middle Ages, Calcio Storico or Historic Football is an intriguing fusion of soccer, rugby, and wrestling, captivating audiences for centuries. Today, every June, Florence’s iconic Piazza Santa Croce morphs into a symbolic battleground, with the sport steeped in a history that dates back to Roman times.

Calcio Storico wasn’t a sport for the masses but was a privilege of the affluent aristocrats who, between Epiphany and Lent, engaged in nightly games. Even esteemed figures like Popes Clement VII, Leo XI, and Urban VIII partook in the action within Vatican City walls.

The Courageous Heart of Florence

In the face of adversity, Florence has always shown a defiant spirit. Amidst a 1530 siege by Charles V’s imperial troops, the undeterred Florentines organized a Calcio Storico match. Their bravery resonated in Piazza Santa Croce, as noblemen and princes fiercely engaged in the “noble game”. This demonstration of courage is a cherished chapter in the sport’s rich narrative.

The Revival of a Tradition

Interest in Calcio Storico may have dwindled in the early 17th century, but the game made a comeback in 1930 under Mussolini’s Kingdom of Italy. In the streets and squares, handmade balls became symbols of a revived tradition that continues to thrive today.

Now, the annual competition is a representation of the four historic quarters of Florence: Santa Croce/Azzurri (Blues), Santa Maria Novella/Rossi (Reds), Santo Spirito/Bianchi (Whites), and San Giovanni/Verdi (Greens). After intense, inaugural games, the two victors clash in the grand finale, held every 24th of June, the feast of Florence’s Patron Saint, San Giovanni. This event, despite its rough and tumble nature, continues to captivate the world with its raw energy and unyielding spirit.

Unraveling the Rules of Calcio Storico

For the uninitiated, Calcio Storico is an athletic spectacle like no other. Here’s a glimpse into the intriguing rules that govern this age-old sport:

  • Each match lasts 50 minutes and takes place on a sandy field, double the length of its width. Dividing the field in half is a white line, with a goal net stretching the full breadth at each end.
  • Comprising each team are 27 players, and the game has no provisions for substitutions, irrespective of injuries or expulsions. The team makeup is as follows: four goalkeepers, three fullbacks, five halfbacks, and fifteen forwards.
  • The goal, or ‘caccia’, is simple: the teams aim to land the ball in the opponent’s net by any means. However, precision is crucial. Any ball thrown or kicked above the net gifts the opposition a half caccia. After 50 minutes, the team with the most cacce takes the victory.
  • Despite the game’s rough nature, rules do exist to maintain a modicum of order. More than one player cannot attack an opponent, and tactics causing serious injuries, like sucker punches or kicks to the head, are banned.
  • Now that you’ve been introduced to the essence of Calcio Storico, it’s time to experience it firsthand.
