How best to see and experience the Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra) on a Tour

The Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra) is a famous attraction on the stunningly beautiful island of Capri. Located in the Bay of Naples, the unique sea cave is named from the bright blue light that filters through the water by way of an opening below the sea level.

To see and experience inside the cave, visitors need to board a small rowboat and duck down as they enter through the low opening. The glowing blue/turquoise light is justly famous and worth the visit.

Avoiding the long wait times at the Blue Grotto

A visit or tour to the Blue Grotto is a must see for guests on a special day trip, shore excursion or tour from the beautiful Amalfi Coast, Naples, Sorrento, Positano and Rome.

You can reach the cave by water and land. To enter the cave an official rowboat must be used. Because of high numbers of tourists, wait times can be hours.

Top tip for seeing the Blue Grotto

Passengers on private boat tours are given precedence. It is best to book your boat transfer to and from the Blue Grotto in advance with Artviva to avoid long wait times. You can also reserve a private tour and a private boat ride around Capri adding the Faraglioni rocks.

Top Things to Know about the Blue Grotto

Blue Grotto Tickets

It’s best to join a boat tour- as at the cave entrance, a boat ticket must be purchased at a floating office before you can enter. The ticket is included in Artviva’s Capri and Blue Grotto boat tours to save you time.

Weather and the Blue Grotto

The Blue Grotto is open when weather conditions permit.

Sun Protection

While waiting to enter the blue grotto, make sure you have a hat and sun protection.

Sea Sickness

It’s best not to go if you suffer from seasickness.

Blue Grotto Serenades Tip

Some jocular row boat skippers will enjoy singing a serenade for you if you offer a small tip.

How to Get to the Isle of Capri’s Blue Grotto

By Sea: from the Marina Grande port
By Land: From the island town of Anacapri.

When is it best to go to the Blue Grotto

Avoid the crowds by visiting early in the morning. Crowds are worst at middays and in summers.
The Blue Grotto is open when weather and sea conditions are right. The cave may have to close without prior warning if seas become rough or there are high winds.
