Cosimo I de’Medici, Cosimo the First, Duke of Florence from 1537, and, after 1570, First Grand Duke of Tuscany, gave the Medici name another two-hundred years of dynastic life that lasted another five generations or until the death of the last Medici Grand Duke, Gian Gastone, in 1737.

The single most visible Medici presence in Florence today, Cosimo created a modern state of Tuscany, supplying it with a new centralized administration (housed in its offices or Uffizi), a navy protecting maritime trade through the soon-to-be duty-free port of Livorno, and creating a remarkable propaganda machine by means of his promotion of literature and the Tuscan language through literary academies, and the promotion of Tuscan fine arts through the Academy of Disegno entrusted to his right-hand man for painting and architecture, Giorgio Vasari.

Not to be confused with Cosimo de’Medici ‘Cosimo the Elder’
