The Cinque Terre is comprised of five village towns nestled along the coast of Liguria. One of these Cinque Terre towns is Monterosso (with the other Cinque Terre villages being Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia and Vernazza).

Monterosso is famous for having the only sandy beach of the Cinque Terre villages, making it popular amongst tourists and locals alike.

The village has a great production of olives, lemons, grapes and the resulting white wine.

The town of Monterosso features a castle, partly gone to ruin. There is also the John the Baptist church dating back to the late 1200s-early 1300s with its medieval bell tower.

A visit to the Monterosso convent gives an insight into how life was lived in the 1600s, as well as to see the precious artworks held there within, including by Van Dyke, Strozzi and Cambiaso.

One of the most impressive aspects of Monterosso is Il Gigante - a giant sculpture that seems to be coming out of cliffs off the Fegina beach. Dating back to 1910, it was constructed in cement and iron to a height of 14 metres. Depicting Neptune, it sustained damage during the World War II and from strong seas in the mid-1960s. Today, the poor ol’ giant is missing a leg, both arms and his trident, but still manages to rule over the charming village of Monterosso.
