Stealing
Beauty
Stealing Beauty creates
a serene mood that's so soothing you'll want to book a flight to Tuscany
immediately, just to soak up the setting's idyllic atmosphere. If you're
in the right frame of mind, this movie is like a balm for the soul, and
Tyler and Bertolucci can share the credit for making this two-hour vacation
so charmingly relaxing. --Jeff Shannon --

A
Room With A View (1986)
A Room with a View
was released in 1985, but it was this popular film that made them art-house
superstars. Splendidly adapted from EM
Forsters A Room witha View. This
film is an all time classic for catching glimpses of Florence and the
Tuscan countryside. Walking Tours of Florence does tours which visit the
Bardi Chapel seen in the Church of Santa Croce in the Film. Our Mornings
in Tuscany Tour also visits a castle estate that looks over the famous
scene where they were enjoying distant views of Florence in the poppy
fields.
Much
Ado About Nothing (1993)
Kenneth Branagh's 1993
production of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing is a vigorous and imaginative
work, cheerful and accessible for everyone. We love it because you can
see the beautifil Villa near Florence called Vigna Maggio where Mona Lisa
grew up. Walking Tours of Florence can organize private tours with a wine
tasting to visit Vigna Maggio. You can stay at Vigna Maggio as well. It
has two very nice pools and accommodation with stunning views of the Tuscan
countryside email us for more information
Up
at the Villa
Strangely reminiscent
of Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut, Philip Haas's Up at the Villa is
a similarly insulated psychosexual drama detached from the larger world
yet with consequences well beyond itself. As with Kubrick's final masterpiece,
Up at the Villa is constructed around a self-centered character whose
insecurities about marriage set a disastrous chain of events into motion.
Kristin Scott Thomas plays Mary Panton, a comely Englishwoman staying
at a villa in Florence, Italy, in the late 1930s. Sheltered by the goodwill
of the British and American community there, Mary--with little money and
few prospects for survival outside marriage--dithers over her uncertain
destiny and dreams of independence.
Based on a novella by W. Somerset Maugham, Up At the Villa finds Mary
forced to take charge of her life after a one-night stand with an Austrian
immigrant (Jeremy Davies) leads to tragedy. Sean Penn plays a cavalier
American playboy who helps her out in the nightmarish aftermath. Both
he and Thomas approach Haas's artful film noir with intentionally mannered
performances that blur the line between internal and external experience.
The result is a kind of midnight journey through minefields of the subconscious.
Still, the
film is not without weaknesses: getting a fix on Penn's roughly sketched
character, for instance, proves unsatisfying given his clichéd
roguishness. And Haas seems to be plucking derivative ideas from everywhere:
there's a strange stretch in the second act in which he goes out of
his way to make a Hitchcockian film that really does look and sound
like a Hitchcock film. While the result is eerie, you have to wonder
why Haas would be so blunt about it. --Tom Keogh

Life
Is Beautiful (1998)
Italy's rubber-faced
funnyman Roberto Benigni accomplishes the impossible in his World War
II comedy Life Is Beautiful: he shapes a simultaneously hilarious and
haunting comedy out of the tragedy of the Holocaust. An international
sensation and the most successful foreign language film in years Life
is Beautiful is an absolute joy.
The
English Patient (1996)
Winner of nine Academy
Awards and almost every critic's heart, The English Patient (based on
Michael Ondaatje's prizewinning novel of love and loss during World War
II) is one of the most acclaimed films of modern times.
Gladiator
(2000)
A big-budget summer
epic with money to burn and a scale worthy of its golden Hollywood predecessors,
Ridley Scott's Gladiator is a rousing, grisly, action-packed epic that
takes movie making back to the Roman Empire via computer-generated visual
effects. The most emotionally rousing scenes are shot in the stunning
Tuscan landscape, around an area called the Val d'orcia. There Ridley
Scott found the perfect play of light and wonderful sunsets. Some scenes
were also shot beside a little church known as the Madonna da Vita Leta.
Walking Tours of Florence can arrange private tours to visit this stunning
part of Tuscany.
Fellini's
Roma (1972)
Federico Fellini's
1972 ode to the city of Rome is far from a coherent narrative, but as
a selection of images and sounds celebrating the famed Italian capital,
it's dazzling and hugely enjoyable. Stylistically, it's a perfect bridge
between the excesses of Satyricon and the nostalgia of Amarcord
Cinema
Paradiso - The New Version (1990)
Giuseppe Tornatore's
beautiful 1988 film about a little boy's love affair with the movies deservedly
won an Oscar for Best Foreign Film and a Special Jury Prize at Cannes.
Philippe Noiret plays a grizzled old projectionist who takes pride in
his presentation of screen dreams for a town still recovering from World
War II. When a child (Jacques Perrin) demonstrates fascination not only
for movies but also for the process of showing them to an audience, a
lifelong friendship is struck. This isn't just one of those films for
people who are already in love with the cinema. But if you are one of
those folks, the emotional resonance between the action in Tornatore's
world and the images on Noiret's screen will seem all the greater--and
the finale all the more powerful. --Tom Keogh
